The Great North Run 2009

I loved every minute of it.

The crowds were great, as was the organisation. I ran non-stop to finish in a time of 1hr 50mins, which was very pleasing for my debut half-marathon.

I have reached my fundrasing target but sponsorship/donations can still be accepted at http://www.justgiving.com/robertwheatley/

Medal Time

8 miles ahoy!

Ran eight miles in just over an hour. Felt pretty good afterwards.

Three weeks until the Great North Run, so I am aiming to run further next weekend then taper ahead of the big day (or something like that).

Ran 6 miles on Sunday in hot conditions. I had to stop a couple of times to take on fluid but ran for 47 minutes.

No ill effects so far (touch wood), so I’ll do some exercise during the week and then do 7 miles next Sunday.

With the race looming large every mile is good preparation.

Back, back, back!

After troublesome shin splints I re-started my training in earnest by running 3 miles yesterday (Sunday).

My pace was roughly 8 minutes a mile and I felt good. The plan is to do a couple of short runs during the week and then do 5 miles at the weekend.

It feels very good to be back.

Slow progress

Long time no update.

I have been seeing a physio about my shin splints and have had to cut down my training and mileage to next to nothing. Very frustrating to say the least.

With just over 8 weeks to go this is not ideal preparation. However I am going to the gym 3 times a week to improve my fitness with the build up in miles coming in the 6 weeks prior to race day.

Two Castles 10km Race

Today was the Two Castles 10km race from Warwick Castle to Kenilworth Castle.

The weather conditions were cold and wet but still about 3,000 runners lined up at the start.

I started off at a good pace but as the course became more uphill my pace dropped off a bit. I finished 534th in a time of 48:31, which I was pleased with given that injury has hampered my preparation.

It’s now 3 1/2 months until the Great North Run so this was encouraging.

Two Castles 10km Race

After a period of rest and a visit to the Doctor’s I was able to do a short interval workout this morning.

30 seconds at full tilt followed by 30 seconds at a slow recovery jog. Repeat until knackered.

I felt good afterwards. My shin didn’t feel as tender as before and my fitness levels didn’t seem too bad.

Next Sunday is the 10k 2 castles run, which I am looking forward too. With a good run out during Wednesday football I’m hoping to be as prepared as I can be.

Injury woes

After a few weeks of pain in my left calf/tibia I had to try plan b, which was a bike ride instead of running.

I duly borrowed my father-in-law’s old road bike and set off. Unfortunately I had to stop a few times to pump up the tyres. At least it took the pressure off of my leg and hopefully kept my fitness up.

I plan to play within myself at football on Wednesday and then cycle again next weekend and then re-assess my leg. Fingers crossed for plan b.

A busy week

It’s been a busy week.

Football on Wednesday was good. Excellent to see Dave back and on form.

Thursday afternoon was a treat as I got my first round of golf in for a long, long time. I met Nigel and Scott at Stratford Oaks and played a competitive 18 in pleasant conditions.

We played skins format and I got lucky and won 12 skins with Scott and Nigel claiming 3 each. Happy Days.

On Sunday I managed just under 4 miles with a few lingering aches and pains, and today I received my race info pack for the 2 castles 10k run in June. http://www.twocastlesrun.org.uk/

Ouch!

I strained my back at the weekend when adjusting the height of a baby high chair! Painful indeed.
As such I just did three miles yesterday.

On a more positive note I have signed up for the 2 castles 10k run at the start of June.
